Beta Chi Pi, JoeBotics and Earth Angels members provided hands-on STEM experiences to the children of the alumnae and visitors at the St. Joe Angel Fest on October 13.
The Beta Chi Pi (science honor society) activities include creating bracelets using light sensitive beads, magic ink that changes from clear to red on goldenrod paper, rainbow viewing scopes, fluorescing ink drawings, centripetal spinners and more.
The JoeBotics team members helped the children to control the robotic Sphero Balls using the coding on their cell phones. The students challenged them to run the Spheros into bowling pins to knock them over.
Earth Angels helped the children to create Seed Bombs to throw into their yard at home to plant flowers for the spring.
Also taking place this past weekend was the Spirit of St. Louis Air Show, sponsored by the Boeing Company. Six members of the SJA JoeBotics team and their coach, Mrs. Haddock, were able to attend thanks to Mr. Jay Meersman, SJA Board member and Vice President of Boeing Global Services.
While enjoying the air show, trying flight simulators and sitting in a Black Hawk Helicopter, the students ran into Amy Hartweger ‘88, who works at Boeing in St. Louis and is a pilot. They received first-hand information and advice on careers in flight from Amy.
