Up and Coming
By: College Advising Department
With the start of the 2018-2019 school year quickly approaching, the new College Advising Office is actively planning for events and new initiatives. Building off the strong foundation established by their predecessors, Mrs. Hasbrouck and Ms. Holladay will continue to bring in colleges and universities from around the country and abroad, while streamlining and personalizing the college search process.
College representatives will now have a variety of visit options including early morning breakfasts, lunch presentations and informational meet and greets with students and families. Visits will run throughout the academic school year and reps will highlight specific academic and extracurricular programs that are of particular interest to our student population.
Additionally, the year will begin with a parent information session on August 29 at 4:30 p.m. regarding the cumbersome task of paying for college. Ms. Holladay will introduce parents to a variety of financial options and provide insight into the processes of making post-secondary education affordable. Furthermore, September 5 from 1-3 p.m. will mark the first all senior session of the year and will include breakout workshops with university experts from the University of Tulsa and Rockhurst University. They will tackle the increasingly important topics of admissions essays and academic resumes, focusing on how to stand out in an age of digital applications.
Mrs. Hasbrouck will be the counselor for last names beginning with A-K, while Ms. Holladay will guide those beginning with L-Z. Parents of SJA students are welcome to attend college information sessions, meet and greets, as well as visit the counseling office during one of the soon-to-be established coffee hours. Finally, be on the lookout for the new College Counseling Instagram page, as weekly updates and reminders will be posted there as well as the website. It’s going to be a great year!
