ST. LOUIS, MO. - On Tuesday, January 8, 2019, St. Joseph's Academy and Cor Jesu Academy held their 15th annual Funderwear Challenge. The SJA and CJA school communities collected 20,333 pairs of socks and underwear for St. Patrick Center. The collection and challenge concluded at the SJA Angels vs. CJA Chargers Varsity Basketball Game at Cor Jesu Academy.
The Funderwear Challenge began 15 years ago as a way for the two schools to benefit an important cause. "Funderwear is the perfect way for us to work together to help the homeless of St. Louis through St. Patrick Center" says Diane Everitt, SJA Theology teacher and Spirit Club Moderator. The event combines friendly competition and lives out the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet’s calling to serve the “Dear Neighbor.”
The challenge is a favorite among the student body. St. Joseph's Academy senior and Spirit Club officer Bella Lorenz tells KMOV that “Of course the game is always fun and we like cheering and the competition, but our motto is “Not I, But We”… and together we have been able to accomplish so much more.”
Since the inception of the Funderwear Challenge, the two schools have collected over 175,000 pairs of socks and underwear for St. Patrick Center. For SJA, the goal is to win the game and surpass the amount collected in years past. As both teams compete for victory each year, SJA Varsity Basketball Coach Julie Matheny states that the "real winners are the families and those in need who benefit from the generosity of these two school communities."
