Summer STEM Adventures

A number of our students participated in STEM summer programs. They will be presenting the highlights of their adventures to their peers after school August 21, in the de Paul room. This will be a joint gathering of Beta Chi Pi (the science honor society), Earth Angels (the environmental club), and SWENext (our Society of Women Engineers Next Generation chapter).

Kara Greger ’20 carried out an independent research project at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center,under the direction of Dr. Ruth Kaggwa. She conducted an experiment entitled "Characterizing root system architectural traits for select mutant families of the C4 model plant Green Foxtail Millet (Setaria viridis)," which explored the relationship between root system traits (below ground) and shoot system traits (above ground)." Greger will be presenting her research findings at the American Geophysical Union’s fall conference in Washington D.C and at the Honors Science Fair, the Academy of Science’s Intel International Science Fair qualifying event.

Margie Lodes ’20 was a summer fellow in Washington University’s Tyson Environmental Research Fellowship (TERF) program. Margie was part of a team researching how biodiversity and ecosystem functioning changes under climate change. In particular, they examined the biodiversity of soil microbes and how it positively impacts ecosystems. She will present the results of her research at the AGU conference and the Honors Science Fair.
Emma Mueller ’20 has begun her research work for the AGU conference and Honors Science Fair on the effect of acid rain on soil nutrients and crop health. Mrs. Katie Lodes is her mentor in the St. Joe lab.

Lauren Limp ’19 completed the interactive AIMS Medical and Surgical Procedures Workshop at St. Louis University Medical School. The workshop provided an overview of anatomy and highlighted various positions in the medical field. Each day consisted of medical professionals such as orthopedic surgeons, cardiologists, radiologists, and medical technicians, lecturing on their individual career paths and life on the job. Lauren worked on cadavers to sew stitches and examine organs. She viewed multiple live surgeries that included an ACL repair, Tommy Johns, rotator cuff and a splenectomy. Other hands-on activities included dissecting sheep eyes, hearts and brains. All of these activities helped Laurent to better understand anatomy, “Overall I enjoyed the week and learned a vast amount of new information.” 
Sophie Wieser ’20 participated in the Zoo ALIVE teen volunteer program at the St. Louis Zoo. She was a counselor at Camp KangaZoo, where the children learned about animal behaviors and the environments that the animals live in. She also assisted at the stingray exhibit and helped lead classes about the marine animals. Sophie comments, “The program was a great learning experience and a great way to meet new people who have the same interests as me. I will for sure continue to volunteer at the zoo in the future!”
Emma Mueller ’20 and Sophia Gabriele ’21 attended Camp Cardiac at Washington University. According to Emma, “The camp was a great introduction to medical school and included many hands on activities such as: taking a patient history, interacting with a patient simulator, dissecting a pig heart and learning how to suture on a pig’s foot.” 
Sage Andersohn ’19 worked in the Dantas Lab at Washington University Medical School, which focuses on antibiotic resistance. Her project was to characterize the antibacterial properties of Niclosamide, a drug used to kill parasites. Sage worked with an undergraduate student working with agar plates, over 40 types of different bacteria strains (gram positive/ negative and aerobic/anaerobic) and Gel PCR (replicating genes) with Sanger sequencing of genes.

Lucy Andrew ’21 went to Cub Creek Science Camp in Rolla for two weeks and learned about different types of animals. Cub Creek has 300 animals of over 100 different species. Lucy says about her experience, “Personally, I love reptiles, so I spent the majority of my time learning/interacting with snakes. I took care of April, a baby wallaby, and I hung out with a bunch of Ring-tail Lemurs! I had a blast, and I can't wait to go back next summer and see all my friends.” 
Mags Maloney ’19attended Jackling Introduction to Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla. During the week long camp, she explored many different kinds of engineering programs that the school offered such as aerospace, civil, architectural, chemical, and petroleum engineering. Students were put into groups and were asked to construct a "Flugtag,” a device that would be launched from a slide and would have to launch an airplane/flying device that then landed in a pool. According to Maloney, “The goal was to construct an efficient device that slid down a slide and launched the airplane the farthest of all the other groups. My group won! Overall, the camp was really fun, I made a lot of new friends just by playing cards, and I was able to get a feel for what engineering would be like on a college campus. It helped me decide what type of engineering I wanted to do (I have officially decided to add architectural engineering along with civil).”

Mary Hayes ‘20, Julia Ringhausen ‘20, and Katie Young ‘20 participated in the GlobalHack Intro to Web Development coding camp at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. According to Hayes, “We learned the basics of HTML and Java Script, even creating our own websites.” 
Lauren Gallagher ’19 attended the Anatomy Centered Education and Science summer workshop at Logan University. She was able to view cadavers, dissect a cow's eye, and learn about infectious diseases, the five senses, physical therapy, spinal health, and more. According to Gallagher, “the camp was mostly hands-on and the professors giving the lectures were great.”
