St. Joseph’s Academy Alumna Awarded Truman Scholarship

ST. LOUIS, MO. – St. Joseph’s Academy alumna, Kathleen Hannick ’15, was one of only 59 students in the United States to be selected as a 2018 Truman Scholar by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, President of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, announced the names of the 2018 Truman Scholars. The Truman Scholarship, created by Congress in 1975, is the premier graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders in the United States. Each scholar is awarded a scholarship for graduate study and will receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunities within the federal government. 

Hannick is a junior at Seattle University studying economics and public affairs and minoring in Chinese and Asian Studies. At Seattle University, she serves as the Civic Engagement Chair for the Student Government and volunteers with a local YMCA to advise a group of high school students on government affairs and civic engagement.

At St. Joseph’s Academy, Hannick was elected Missouri Youth Governor at Missouri Youth in Government (now Missouri Youth and Government). She represented Missouri at the Conference on National Affairs (CONA) and was one of six delegates chosen to lead the CONA national program as Presiding Officer. Hannick served as St. Joseph’s Academy Student Council Vice President, Environmental Club President, Science Honor Society President and Math Honor Society Secretary. She also was a member of the Chinese Honor Society, National Honor Society, Varsity Swim Team and Varsity Golf Team. Her service work through St. Joseph’s Academy included three service trips to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity to help build homes in the Lower Ninth Ward.

St. Joseph’s Academy is a private, Catholic high school for girls in St. Louis, Missouri, sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The school’s mission is to provide quality Catholic education for young women in an environment that challenges them to grow in faith, knowledge, and respect for self and others.
