Marine Biology Science Students in Action

Our Marine Biology Class was selected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to participate in their “Adopt a Drifter” program.

A drifter is a piece of scientific equipment that collects data on the ocean’s surface. Drifters allow scientists to track ocean currents, changes in temperature, salinity and other important components of the ocean’s surface as they float freely, pulled by ocean currents beneath the surface and transmit information.
The mission of the “Adopt a Drifter” program is to establish scientific partnerships between schools around the world and engage students in activities and communication about ocean climate science. More information about the program can be found here.

The St. Joe Marine Biology Class is working in collaboration with the Luis Domenechi Montaner School in Barcelona, Spain, tracking a drifter just off the east coast of the United States.

Thank you to Mrs. Katie Lodes for developing and providing these stimulating experiences for our Marine Science students.
