A Day in the Clinical Laboratory

On Saturday, March 3, junior Emily Giannotti and Dr. Rose Davidson attended the Day in the Clinical Laboratory event sponsored by Saint Louis University’s Clinical Health Sciences Department and SLU’s Student Chapter of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). After a rigorous selection process, Emily was selected as the St. Joe student to attend this event.

During the day, students investigated the case of a SLU student’s mysterious illness. Through lab work in urinalysis, cytology, microbiology, hematology and the chemical analysis of molecular compounds, the students were able to diagnose the underlying causes of the illness.

This event was a great opportunity for students like Emily, who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine, research, forensic science and the pharmaceutical industry, to find out more about the activities involved in those careers.
Emily and Dr. Davidson also interacted with students and professors from the Investigative & Medical Science and the Medical Laboratory Science departments. Investigative & Medical Science offers a strong base in both the basic sciences and medically related coursework. It is a great preparatory degree for post-baccalaureate studies (especially medical school). Medical Laboratory Science prepares graduates to practice in a hospital or clinic lab in conjunction with other healthcare professionals in making diagnostic decisions.
