Holocaust Survivor Meets with Students

SJA proudly welcomed Ms. Giselle (Gita) Cycowicz, a Holocaust survivor living in Israel, to speak with the “Bearing Witness: Holocaust Literature of Extraordinary Lives” class. She shared stories of her tranquil, idyllic childhood in the Carpathian Mountains and the abrupt life-changing events of when her town was under the control of Hungary, which was in collaboration with the Nazis. In 1944, she was transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where she suffered hunger and inhuman living conditions. Today, Ms. Cycowicz is a world-renowned speaker and psychologist. She works at an organization in Israel that provides psychological treatment to Holocaust survivors.

SJA students were moved as she described her time at the concentration camp and had the opportunity to submit questions about her experiences.
