ST. JOSEPH'S ACADEMY AND COR JESU ACADEMY WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
On Tuesday, January 14, 2020, St. Joseph’s Academy (SJA) and Cor Jesu Academy (CJA) held their 16th Annual Funderwear Challenge.
ST. LOUIS, MO – On Tuesday, January 14, 2020, St. Joseph’s Academy (SJA) and Cor Jesu Academy (CJA) held their 16th Annual Funderwear Challenge. The CJA and SJA school communities collected a record-breaking 23,896 pairs of new socks and underwear for St. Patrick Center, in just eight days. The collection and challenge concluded at the CJA Chargers vs. SJA Angels Varsity Basketball Game at St. Joseph’s Academy.
The Funderwear Challenge began 16 years ago as a way for the two schools to make a difference for an important cause in our community.
“For 16 years, the students at Cor Jesu Academy and St. Joseph’s Academy, and their families and faculties, have fulfilled a vital need of St. Patrick Center’s mission to end homelessness,” says Kelly Peach, Senior Director of Communications at St. Patrick Center. “New socks and underwear offer dignity to our clients as they work with us to improve their lives. We feel extremely blessed by these large annual donations and the spirit with which they are given truly contributes to making our community better.”
The challenge is a favorite among both student bodies, showcasing each school’s incredible spirit and strong desire to help those in need. Since the inception of the Funderwear Challenge, the two schools have collected over 250,000 pairs of new socks and underwear for St. Patrick Center.
“Cor Jesu’s mission is to Share the Love of the Heart of Christ, and Funderwear allows us to do that for the homeless in our community,” says Mame Blumeyer, CJA Theology teacher and SJA alumna. “The best part is that we can double our efforts by working together with St. Joseph’s Academy.”
The collections for the 2020 Funderwear Challenge began on January 6, 2020 and continued through halftime of the Varsity Basketball game on January 14, 2020. The total pairs of socks and underwear collected – 23,896 – was announced at halftime by St. Patrick Center representatives. It was the most successful Funderwear in history.
"Funderwear is the perfect way for us to work together to help the homeless of St. Louis through St. Patrick Center,” says Diane Everitt, SJA Theology teacher and Spirit Club Moderator. “The event combines friendly competition and lives out the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet’s calling for us to serve the ‘Dear Neighbor.’”
