St. Joseph’s Academy Alumna Selected as Rhodes Scholars

St. Joseph’s Academy alumna, Rossella Gabriele ’15, was announced as one of the 32 Americans chosen as Rhodes Scholars representing the United States.

Rhodes Scholarships were created in 1902 by the Will of Cecil Rhodes. The criteria for applicants to receive all expenses for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England includes academic excellence, having great personal energy, ambition for impact and an ability to work with others and to achieve one’s goals. In addition, a Rhodes Scholar is committed to make a strong difference for good in the world, be concerned for the welfare of others, and be conscious of inequities.

Gabriele graduated magna cum laude at Washington and Lee University (W&L) with a double major in physics and global politics. Her involvement at W&L included serving as the as the co-president of Amnesty International, president of Omicron Delta Kappa, the physics chair of Women in Technology and Science and a Resident Advisor. At Oxford, she plans to pursue master’s degrees in both social data science and global governance and diplomacy.

At St. Joseph’s Academy, Gabriele was the Class of 2015 Salutatorian and a member of National Honor Society, Robotics Team, Student Council, Speech Team, Diversity Club, Spanish Honor Society, Earth Angels (Environmental Club), Beta Chi Pi (Science Honor Society), Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society), Active Citizenship Club, and Weekday Update (Video News Club).

St. Joseph’s Academy is a private, Catholic high school for girls in St. Louis, Missouri, sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The school’s mission is to provide quality Catholic education for young women in an environment that challenges them to grow in faith, knowledge, and respect for self and others.
