St. Louis, Mo., October 17, 2019 -- St. Joseph’s Academy faculty member Katherine “Katie” Lodes today received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) facilitated by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. PAEMST was established by Congress in 1983 and is the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on elementary and secondary school teachers of mathematics and science. Recipients have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful.

Lodes is one of four mathematics and science teachers from Missouri to receive this award this year and the only high school educator representing Missouri. She received her award today during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

“I am humbled to represent my school and our educational community. This honor bolsters my passion to bring the excitement of science to my students,” Lodes said. “I have been blessed to be surrounded, encouraged and challenged by those in the science community to bring this dynamic discipline, complete with its uncertainty, to my students. This award is not about one person but rather represents St. Joseph’s Academy’s overall dedication to learning and sharing.”

Lodes earned an M.A. in Biology from Washington University in St. Louis and has been an educator for 29 years, serving at St. Joseph’s Academy since 2002. Her passion is to bring the people and processes of science to her students. Throughout her career, she has mentored students to present their own research at international conferences, introduced aquarium science and other programs to her department and brought different aspects of Biology, Marine Science and Zoology to life for her students and peers.

“Katie Lodes is the epitome of a ‘scientist as teacher’ in the classroom whose knowledge and love for the biological sciences enables her students to go above and beyond both in and out of the classroom,” said Jennifer Sudekum, Principal at St. Joseph’s Academy. “She facilitates independent research conducted by our students and provides them opportunities to present research to professional scientists at conferences including the Polar Ice Summit and the American Geophysical Union Conference. Her students also participate in prestigious research opportunities, including the Virtual Human Interactions Lab at Stanford University.”
