Catalysts for Change at Washington University

By Dr. Rose Davidson, STEM Coordinator
Grace Lopiccolo ‘22 and Alyssa Yelton ’22 attended the two day Catalysts for Change program at Washington University. This program for freshman girls was designed to develop interest in STEM programs. The Women in Science group at Washington University presented fun science activities for the girls, which allowed them to interact with professional women scientists, work in college-level laboratories, and spend time on a college campus.
Some of the activities included making ice cream using liquid nitrogen as a coolant, dissecting a squid, testing the chemical composition of fireworks, solving a crime using forensics, and building a water filter. Many scientists were on hand to speak with the girls about their careers.
