SWENext DesignLab Community Engagement Challenge
By Dr. Rose Davidson, STEM Coordinator
The SWENext DesignLab Community Engagement Challenge is sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers. Teams are challenged to create proposals with a $1,000 budget to implement a community service project.
Sydney Hilker, Marissa Ledbetter, and Katie Young presented the work of the JoeBotics team at the SWENext DesignLab event on March 2, 2019. They met with engineers and asked them questions about their lives, career paths, and college choices. The engineers provided insight into what the life of an engineer is like and how many opportunities are available in this area. The team members were also able to talk to peers from other states to learn more about what inspires them to be engineers.
At the end of the day, they were able to present their design idea for the grant proposal for working with Litzsinger School students on robots. According to Marissa Ledbetter, “this mini-conference gave us the opportunity to learn more about engineering fields and what it's like to be a woman in engineering, as well as an opportunity to demonstrate our utilization of engineering in our grant proposal.”
