Earth Angels Learn about Recycling

By Dr. Rose Davidson, STEM Coordinator
On Monday, January 14, 2019, members of the Earth Angels Club took a field trip to Republic Services in Bridgeton.
Republic Services showed what can be recycled along with how to prepare materials before recycling them. They learned to recycle clean items only, empty liquids from containers and rinse them before recycling.
The students also found out that some items cannot be put into recycling containers at school or at home. Some common items that cannot be recycled include:
  • Polystyrene #6
  • Plastic utensils like forks and spoons
  • Tyvek envelopes
  • 3 ring binders
  • Food
  • Chip bags and candy wrappers
  • Plastic bags (take them to the grocery store for recycling)
Earth Angels then toured the plant to see how the recycling company sorts and processes the items for recycling.
