Each year, St. Joseph’s Academy puts on a musical performance showcasing the voice, acting, design, and technical talents of our students. Our 2021-22 musical production was Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Performances took place on May 12-14, 2022.
ABOUT DISNEY'S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Step into the enchanted world of Broadway's modern classic, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, an international sensation that had a remarkable 13-year run on Broadway and has been produced in 37 countries worldwide. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature, the stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. The original Broadway production was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.
The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon
Each year, St. Joseph’s Academy presents students with the opportunity to perform in the school play. Students participate in a variety of ways – acting, set design, and graphic design.
Our 2021 fall production was The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon! Performances took place on October 22 and 23. The fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm are parodied in this fast-paced show as two narrators and an ensemble of actors attempt to combine all 209 stories, ranging from classics like Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Cinderella, and Rapunzel to more obscure stories like The Devil’s Grandmother. This is a wild, free-form comedy with audience participation and ridiculous fun!
Christmas with the Angels
Each winter, St. Joseph’s Academy presents the Christmas with the Angels Student Concert and the Grand Day for the Arts winter show.
The Grand Day for the Arts show, held prior to the concert, features current artwork from students. A wide variety of materials are used to design, create, and bring each student’s artistic vision to life.
The Christmas with the Angels concert features performances by the Freshman Chorus, the Advanced Chorus, and the Frontenac Voices. Accompanied by professional orchestra instrumentalists, the students treat the audience to joyous music and a wide variety of Christmas selections. In SJA tradition, all choral group alumnae in attendance are invited to the stage for a vocal performance! Our 2021 Art Show and Concert took place on December 5, 2021 at 12:00 p.m.
St. Joseph’s Academy presented our Dance Showcase for the first time on February 11 and 12, 2022. The Dance Showcase was an opportunity for the SJA community to see our talented dancers perform ballet, tap, Irish dance, jazz, contemporary, and musical theatre dance. Student choreography was featured along with professional choreography from the larger St. Louis dance community.
Grand Day for the Arts
Each spring, the Fine Arts Department of St. Joseph's Academy presents the visual art of the SJA art students. Following the art show, the Advanced Chorus, Frontenac Voices and Freshman Chorus perform their spring concert. It is a wonderful day to spend experiencing the arts at St. Joseph's Academy.
A Grand Day for the Arts will take place Sunday, April 24, 2022.
Spring Musical Revue
Each spring, St. Joseph’s Academy presents a musical revue. In May, 2021, the SJA Fine Arts Department presented “St. Joseph’s Academy Goes Broadway.” The Angels engaged audiences with powerful singing, beautiful dancing, intricate costumes, and professional sound and lighting.
