The St. Joseph’s Academy Learning Specialist serves as a resource for students, parents and faculty in supporting individual learning and the mission of the school. The Learning Specialist is located in the Counseling Office. Referrals may be made by students, parents or faculty as needed.

Student Support

The Learning Specialist is available for students as a resource to better understand themselves as learners. Individual and small group instruction is available to identify and practice strategies for achieving academic success. Students should reach out to the Learning Specialist for any questions regarding the educational evaluation or accommodations process. Those receiving accommodations should plan to meet with the Learning Specialist to review their Individual Accommodation Plan and understand how the information is communicated with faculty. Appointments are not required, but encouraged to ensure availability. Students may meet with the Learning Specialist when not in class.

Parent Support

The Learning Specialist is available for parents as a resource in how to best support their daughter in an academic setting. Parents should plan to partner with the Learning Specialist for information regarding outside service providers, educational evaluations, or the accommodations process. Parents should inform the Learning Specialist when scheduling educational evaluations or reevaluations. All requests for completing school input should be facilitated through the Learning Specialist. Communication regarding accommodations on College Board or ACT exams is encouraged prior to completing registration for test dates. Each incoming student must complete the Educational Needs Survey and share all documentation as soon as possible when requesting accommodations. Appointments may be made through the Counseling Department Administrative Assistant to ensure availability.

Faculty Support

The Learning Specialist is available to St. Joseph’s Academy faculty as a resource in differentiating curriculum, understanding various areas of disability and the accommodations process. Student progress monitoring, observations, screenings, and rating scales are also available for students of concern. Faculty may make referrals at any time during the school year. For more information on accommodations, please contact Mrs. Kathryn DePung at (314) 394-4314.

Spence Shine Shack

In the winter of 2020, St. Joseph's Academy opened a new student success center, the “Spence Shine Shack,” which supports the various learning needs and styles of all our students. This new program will serve our girls with tools and furnishings that support active learning, collaborative work and independent study. Every girl will be able to utilize this new program and space, which is designed to take them from where they are academically to where they can fully shine with their God-given talents.

Two former classrooms adjacent to the Library have been transformed into a collaborative learning room and an independent study space. This project was made possible by the generosity of the Dave and Suzie Sauer Spence ’82 Family and the generosity of many through our 2019 Auction Fund-A-Need. At the dedication of the spaces, Suzie noted the scripture passage from Mathew 5: 15-16, "You are the light of the world...So let your light shine," relating it to our school as we encourage all of our students’ light to shine.

Testing

In living the mission of St. Joseph’s Academy, we acknowledge appropriate accommodations are sometimes necessary for the success of students with a diagnosed disability. A Learning Specialist is available for students, parents, and faculty as a resource in navigating the evaluation and accommodations process. Students with a wide variation of learning strengths and challenges are able to find success with the St. Joseph’s Academy college preparatory curriculum. For more information on accommodations, please contact Mrs. Kathryn DePung at (314) 394-4314.
