Athletics

Since 1938, St. Joseph’s Academy has been competing in interscholastic athletics and has built a reputation for success and high standards. Since its first in 1975, the Angels have won a total of 65 team State Championship titles in a variety of sports and more than twenty individual state crowns. In 2005, the program was named by Sports Illustrated magazine as the Best High School Athletic Program in the State of Missouri. Countless students have garnered college athletic scholarships. Lastly, all twelve varsity teams this past year exceeded Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) scholastic achievement standards of a 3.4 grade point average or higher, showing the program’s balanced emphasis on athlete and scholar.

Philosophy

Athletics play an important role in helping the individual student develop a healthy self-concept as well as a healthy body. Additionally, athletic competition generates school spirit and helps all students - spectators as well as participants - develop pride in their school. Our primary goal in each athletic endeavor is to win with honor, dignity, and class. However, winning is not the only goal, nor is it the only measure of a successful program. Win or lose, building character, instilling values, developing leaders are the true measures of our success.

The Academy is blessed with the caliber of student-athletes that attend the school, but the core values and work ethic of the program that have been renewed from one generation to the next can also be credited for the longevity of this success. The objective of the St. Joseph’s Academy Athletic department is to provide student-athletes the opportunity to achieve excellence through participation in a quality interscholastic athletic program where the highest standards are set and the highest achievement is expected. To achieve this objective, the Academy provides student-athletes an educationally sound and supportive environment that enables them to acquire the skill, knowledge, leadership, and dedication necessary for success; the opportunity to compete at a high level, promote good sportsmanship, and represent St. Joseph’s Academy with honor, dignity, and class; lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork, competition, and how to win and lose gracefully.

We believe that the opportunity for participation in interscholastic athletics is a vital part of the educational experience. Such participation is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities to the activity, school, student body, community, and to the students, themselves.
